GST state codes, looked up instantly
Find the GST state code for any Indian state or union territory — or read the state straight off a GSTIN. The full, current list (codes 01–38, plus 97 and 99) is built into the page, so lookups are instant, offline, and private: nothing you type is uploaded.
How to use it
- Search a two-digit code (e.g.
27), a full GSTIN, or a state name (e.g.Kerala). - Paste a GSTIN and the tool reads its state from the first two digits automatically.
- Leave the box empty to browse the whole table; copy it as an Excel/Sheets grid or CSV from the export bar.
FAQ
What is the GST state code for Maharashtra (or any state)?
Maharashtra is 27. Every GST state code is the first two digits of a GSTIN and matches the state's 2011 Census code — for example Karnataka is 29, Tamil Nadu 33, Delhi 07, Gujarat 24. Search this page for the state you need; the full list is built in and works offline.
How do I find the state from a GSTIN?
The first two digits of a 15-character GSTIN are the state code. Paste the whole GSTIN into the search box and this tool reads the state for you — e.g. a GSTIN starting 29 is registered in Karnataka.
Why are codes 25 and 28 marked "erstwhile"?
They were superseded. Code 28 was pre-bifurcation Andhra Pradesh, now split into 37 (Andhra Pradesh) and 36 (Telangana). Code 25 (Daman & Diu) merged into 26 (Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu) from 26 January 2020. They're kept here so older GSTINs still resolve.
Is the list current, and where is it from?
Yes — it reflects the CBIC/GSTN state code list including code 38 (Ladakh). The page shows a "verified" date; the data is reviewed on a schedule so it stays correct.
Limits
This is the official state-code list for GST registration and GSTIN reading. It does not validate a full GSTIN's checksum or look up a taxpayer's details — pair it with a GSTIN validator for that once it's live.

The GST calculator uses these codes to decide CGST/SGST vs IGST; the GSTIN validator pairs naturally once live.
