Why does my post count as longer than the number of characters I typed?
Most platforms count UTF-16 code units rather than characters as you read them. Emoji, many symbols and some scripts cost two units each, so a 130-character caption with several emoji can exceed a 139-unit limit. This page shows both numbers side by side so the gap is visible rather than mysterious.
Are these limits current?
They reflect the published limits at the last review date shown on the page. Platforms change them occasionally, and some vary by account type — X's longer posts for paid accounts are the obvious example. Treat a limit you are close to as worth confirming; the tool tells you the number it used rather than hiding it.
Does the SMS limit really drop to 70 characters?
Yes, if the message contains any character outside the GSM 7-bit alphabet — which includes most emoji, the rupee sign and all Indic scripts. A single such character switches the whole message to a 70-character unit. The caveat is shown next to the SMS row rather than buried.
Is my draft copy sent anywhere?
No. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored — everything happens on your device, which matters when the text is an unannounced launch or a client's campaign. Switch off your Wi-Fi and the page still works.
Limits
Limits are the published per-platform maximums and do not account for account tier, regional variations, or how a platform truncates a preview. Link shorteners change the effective count on X, where every URL counts as 23 characters regardless of length. SEO title and description limits are guidance: Google truncates by pixel width, not character count.
