Why is it harder to remember the order of things than the things themselves?

Knowing it came third is order memory, and it is neither. Order is not a property of any one step; it lives in the links between them, and nothing in the sentence "the kettle boils" records what came before it. So unless you build those links yourself, there is nothing to recall. That is why you can finish this game certain you recognise all seven steps and still not be able to say which was second — the two kinds of memory come apart, and only one of them was doing any work.

A few everyday steps go past one at a time. Put them back in the order you saw.

Four short steps play through, one to a card — the kettle boils, the laces are pulled tight — and then they come back shuffled. You rebuild the order from the front: pick the one that came first, then the one after it, and so on. Get a list right and the next one is a step longer, from four up to seven. The steps have nothing to do with each other on purpose, so nothing but the order you actually saw can tell you the answer.

How to play

  1. Focus the board — click it, or press Tab until it is focused.
  2. Watch the list play. One step is on screen at a time, with its number above it. Press any key — or click the card — to bring up the next one. Nothing moves until you do, so take as long as you want on each.
  3. Link each step to the one before it. Kettle, then laces is easier to hold as one small picture — steam hitting a shoe — than as two separate facts. That link is the thing the game is about, and it is what you will be asked for.
  4. Rebuild the order. When the last step has been shown, the whole set comes back shuffled underneath an empty numbered list. Arrow keys move the outlined cursor along the shuffled steps, Enter places the one under it, or click a step directly.
  5. Fill the list from the front. Position 1 first, then 2. A step that really was next locks into place with a tick; anything else costs you one wrong placement and gets a cross, which stays until that position is filled so you never pay for the same step twice.
  6. Watch the wrong placements. The status row shows how many you have left. They run out and the run ends — and the true order comes up on the board so you can see which link you lost.
  7. Keep going. Every list you rebuild adds a step, up to seven, and each new list comes with a fresh allowance of wrong placements.

What is the trick for remembering a sequence, then?

Chain it. Take each step and tie it to the next one with a single vivid image, so the pair becomes one thing instead of two: kettle, then laces — steam pouring over a shoe. Then laces to sail: the laces pulling a sail up. Each picture holds two steps together, and recalling the first drags the second up after it. This is why the game is called Story Order. It is an old technique, sometimes called the chain or link method, and its whole content is that order has to be given a hook because it does not come with one. You will notice the difference immediately at five and six steps, which is roughly where unaided order memory gives out.

Do the steps go in the order that makes sense?

No, and that is enforced rather than left to chance. Each list takes one step from a different little routine — one from making tea, one from tying a shoe, one from a boat — so no two steps in a list can imply an order between them. If the game let you have "the kettle is filled" and "the kettle boils" in the same list, you could work half of it out with common sense instead of memory, and the number at the end would be flattering you. Nothing but what you saw decides the answer here.

Is the shuffle ever partly solved already?

Never. The shuffled steps are checked before they are dealt: no step is allowed to sit in the position it was shown in. A plain shuffle leaves one step in place roughly a quarter of the time on a four-step list, and the first position in particular comes out free about as often — so a player who always guessed "the leftmost one" would be handed part of the puzzle. Rejecting those makes every list a real reordering. The check is a hard requirement of the generator, not a preference, and it has a guaranteed fallback so it can never fail to produce a list.

How many wrong placements do I get?

It depends on the shuffle, and it is measured rather than guessed. Before a list is dealt, the game works out the longest chain of shuffled steps that already happens to be in the right order — the part you could get right by reading left to right, remembering nothing. The rest is the part your memory has to supply, and each of those steps buys you one wrong placement, between two and five. So a tangled list gets more room than a kind one. It is never enough to simply try every card in turn: that costs six wrong placements on even the shortest list, and five is the most you can ever have.

Is there any money, betting or in-app purchase in this?

None, and there never will be. No currency, no purchases, no lives to refill, nothing to win and nothing to lose but the length of the list you reached.

Can I play it with a keyboard or a screen reader?

Both, fully. Every shuffled step is a button with its sentence as its label, and the list plays through the live region one step at a time — exactly what a sighted player sees, no more. Nothing is signalled by colour alone: a placed step carries a tick and its position number, a step you offered and were charged for carries a cross, and one still waiting carries a small arrow. The whole board reads in plain words.

Limits

Four lists, from four steps up to seven, drawn from fourteen short routines of three steps each. Seven is the ceiling on purpose: past that the game would be measuring your patience with a long tray more than your memory for order, and the honest reading of "I got to six" is more useful than a bigger number nobody clears. There is no clock anywhere — the reveal is counted in moves, so reading slowly costs nothing and the same session plays identically on a five-year-old phone and a new laptop. Every list comes from the day's seed, so the daily list is the same list for everyone and it can be reproduced exactly. This is a memory game, not a diagnostic: a poor run means you were tired or distracted far more often than it means anything else.
