How do you make a grid pattern symmetric?
Stop looking at the pattern and start looking at pairs. Each cell on the left has exactly one partner on the right, and the only question that matters is whether those two agree โ the shape they form together is irrelevant. Work row by row, compare each pair, and flip one of the two whenever they differ. That is why the board marks mismatches directly: once you see the puzzle as ten independent yes-or-no questions rather than one picture, it stops being a visual search and becomes a checklist.
5 pairs still disagree. Cursor at column 1, row 1, filled.
โ โ โ โ move ยท Enter toggle. No timer, no move limit, nothing to lose.
What this builds
SKILL โ see reflective symmetry as pairs that agree, not as a shape you squint at
Make both halves match
A pattern that was symmetric has had a few cells flipped. Toggle cells until the two halves agree again. There is no timer, no move limit and no way to lose โ the board simply tells you how many mirror pairs still disagree, and you watch that number fall.
It runs entirely on your device: 0 network requests, works offline. No ads, no account, nothing to buy, and no betting, money or prizes of any kind.
How to play
- Focus the board โ click it, or press Tab until it is focused.
- Move with the arrow keys. The cursor is outlined, not just tinted.
- Toggle with Enter. The cell fills or empties.
- Follow the โ marks. Any cell that disagrees with its mirror carries one, so you never have to compare halves by eye.
- Get "pairs left" to zero. That is the whole game โ take as long as you like.
FAQ
How do you make a grid pattern symmetric?
Stop looking at the pattern and start looking at pairs. Each cell on the left has exactly one partner on the right, and the only question that matters is whether those two agree โ the shape they form together is irrelevant. Work row by row, compare each pair, and flip one of the two whenever they differ. That is why the board marks mismatches directly: once you see the puzzle as ten independent yes-or-no questions rather than one picture, it stops being a visual search and becomes a checklist.
Can I get stuck or lose?
No. There is no timer, no move limit and no fail state โ the only ending is a solved one. That is deliberate: this is the calm game in the catalogue, and a calm game that can punish you is not one.
Why does toggling the middle column do nothing to the count?
Because the centre column is its own mirror. A cell there is always compared with itself, so it always agrees, and flipping it can neither break nor fix a pair. It is still yours to change if you prefer the look of it โ it just will not move the number.
How many moves should it take?
Exactly five, if you never waste one. Boards are made by taking a symmetric pattern and breaking a known number of pairs, so the fewest possible moves is known by construction rather than estimated โ which is also why the "pairs left" figure can be trusted.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded once, the whole game is on your device โ pattern, rules, everything. There is no server involved in play at any point.
Is there any money, betting or in-app purchase in this?
None, and there never will be. No currency, nothing to buy, no lives to refill, no wager of any kind.
Can I play it with a keyboard or a screen reader?
Both. Arrows move, Enter toggles, and the board announces each cell as filled or empty and says outright when one does not match its mirror. Filled and empty are different glyphs, and mismatches carry a โ mark, so nothing depends on telling hues apart.
Limits
Five by five, five broken pairs, and ten mirror pairs in total โ the centre column is excluded from the count because it cannot disagree with itself.
